let's talk lashes...

everyone receives compliments at one point in their lives. "i love your lipstick" "your eyes are so beautiful" "where did you get that top?" you get the point... over the years, the number one compliment i have received is "your eyelashes are so long, what mascara do you use?" now i have really long lashes that i don't have to curl, so using these mascaras aren't going to instantly grow your lashes & you might have to use a lash curler, but i promise, they will do the trick to give the illusion of thick, luscious lashes. when i don't have makeup on you can't even see my lashes, so mascara would probably be the number one thing i take with me to a deserted island. with that said, i thought i would do a post on my favorite tested, tried, & true mascaras. each picture is wearing the mascara shown... hope you enjoy!

1.) COVERGIRL GREAT LASH (Curved Brush in Brown Black): this is the mascara i have used from the first time i ever tried mascara all the way til right before i got married at age 24. this mascara has never failed me & i am convinced a curved brush makes all the difference... so purchase the all pink tube as opposed to the green & pink tube which is the most famous mascara there is. i also am picky about the color. black looks way too dark & heavy with my blonde hair & blue eyes so i pick colors that are in the brown family. i wear Brown for when i do light makeup, & Brown Black for nights out. every girl should have this mascara for their go-to, everyday looks.

2.) COVERGIRL LASH BLAST (in Brown): this mascara was recommended to me by my aunt & cousin a couple months before my wedding and i instantly fell in love. it takes a lot to switch me from my standard makeup i've been using for years, but my cousin has the same long lashes as me, so i took her word for it. boy this mascara is amazing. holy volume & it keeps the lashes separated & without clumping. I use this mascara only for "light makeup" days. just one coat is perfect for a little bit of color for the gym & if i'm wearing no makeup on my face. it gives you color without looking like you have mascara on... or add multiple coats for lots of volume. on the day of my wedding, i had my makeup professionally done with airbrush makeup & lots of fake lashes, but before they put all those falsies on, they put a couple coats of Lash Blast & i was good to go. it doesn't run like #1. sometimes does, & it makes your bottom lashes look great as well.

3.) COVERGIRL CLUMP CRUSHER (Curved Brush in Brown Black): and here we have it... the number 1 best mascara i have ever found. hands down, the greatest one ever created. it is all in the brush. i am a sucker for a curved brush & this one is done to perfection. you can just feel it as you put it on, it completely separates your lashes & lengthens like no other. i am in love. i was in cvs the other day & i just on a whim, decided to try this mascara... so i bought it, used it for the wardrobe post above, & there you have it. does a good job huh? even my best friend rach agrees... it is that good.

* some personal tips: mascara is the last thing i put on when i do my makeup. even lipstick comes before lashes for me. having a bad eyelash day is worse than a bad hairday according to me & i take my mascara application very seriously. i always, always, always do my makeup in natural light. i park my ass in front of a window & prop my handy mirror & sit down & take my time. i do the same routine everyday, besides change my eyeshadows or lipstick color, and it is the one thing i do not rush. even if that means bringing my makeup bag into the car & applying it slowly at every stop light (while pete is driving of course!)

i have found that the way to make my lashes look their best is to apply mascara like this: first i put the brush at the base of the outer half of my lashes and kind of move it back and forth... basically to only get the mascara on the "roots" of my lashes on the outside. then i wait about a minute or so, usually clip my cuticles or work on my hair a bit... then i apply another coat exactly where i just did the first, at the roots of my lashes on the outer part... they will start to look thicker & fuller. then i wait another couple minutes NOT until they are dry, but enough time where the mascara kind of thickens up... then i repeat this until i am all the way up all lashes on the outer half. then the last thing i do is the inner half of the lashes (the ones towards my nose)... just a couple of coats that's it. i look best with thicker lashes on the outside & thinner lashes on the inside & bottom lashes. you know your face, do what is best for you, but this is what works for me & i am hoping this post helps all you girls out a tad in the mascara department. all mascaras are available at your local drugstore & maybe i'll do a video showing my makeup routine in the near future, but let's see if you like this post first :)

  1. Great post!! I can't wait to try the back and forth technique...I always just go up and down slowly but i feel like i can never get everything. also could not agree more that a bad eyelash day/week (yes, I've had weeks before)is the worst thing. EVER.

PS - Do a makeup video tutorial pretty pleaseeeeee!!

  2. I have not only learned mascara tips from Rachael but now from you! Thank you for this. I've tried the orange tube and constantly poke myself in the eye (and it really hurts). Any suggestions on how to avoid hurting myself? I know that sounds silly but it still happens even when I go really slowly. I second Rachael's comment about a video request ;-)
