sunset celebrations

\
we took luke to the beach for the first time for my friend devon's birthday celebrations. she is one of my favorite people in the whole world & it has been so nice to be in the same city as her & start working on some exciting projects together :)  we laid down blankets, watched the sunset, made a small bonfire, ate s'mores, & became one with the sand.
my little bear absolutely loved it & this is now my new favorite picture of the two of us!

san francisco

the first weekend in california we spent visiting Dolores Park: soaking up the sunshine, people watching, & having a few beers. i already know it is going to take me a while to get used to this weather again. during the day you can wear shorts and a tank top with the sun beaming down like no other... but as soon as the sun goes down, it is cold enough for a winter jacket. that makes it super hard to pack for the day & for a baby.
so here is my little bear wearing his bear hat (my mom crocheted him the next size up right before we left) and his "gnome" onesie i got as a gift at my baby shower. this was his first time wearing it, so when i put the hood up, the point went straight up and having it be in white caused a few stares... (hands covering face) ...so i finally got the point to go to the side & he looked like an adorable little gnome & the littlest member of the gnomie pack.

flying with a baby

Friday, May 23, 2014

i'll start right from the beginning.
you hear the horror stories of people flying with babies & the nightmare that ensues. i'm not going to lie, every time i have ever flown, i was one of those people who saw a baby & prayed my seat wasn't going to be anywhere near it. but with luke, i knew he was going to be just fine. when i say he is a good baby... he literally is such a good baby. from the night we took him home from the hospital, he has been a breeze. he sleeps really well (i don't even have to rock him back to sleep at night... i just place him in his crib & he falls back asleep), he is always happy, never fussy, and just an overall easy baby. i'm bragging, i know... but we truly lucked out. so for planning our six hour flight to move back to san fran, i wasn't worried about him flying at all. i was more worried about lugging all his stuff. but i did my homework & it turned out to be an easy (for the most part!) first time flying for our baby.

i first got a lot of advice from moms i knew (and from facebook!) & devised a plan. a few weeks before our flight, i shipped out six boxes of his things. they turned out to be from $30-$40 a box (which is a lot less expensive than checking additional bags!) & planned to bring just my stuff on the plane along with his stroller + car seat. the morning of the flight, we got everything loaded into the car and my brother drove us to JFK. outside the terminal, a very nice man saw us & took us inside to get everything squared away. we checked three huge suitcases and kept luke in his car seat that was attached to the stroller. the car seat base did not come even close to fitting in the storage underneath the stroller, so i used a bungee cord to attach it to the front of the stroller where a child's feet would normally be. i clipped the diaper bag to the stroller and pete carried his backpack + my London Fog travel purse (i never fly without it... available here) while i pushed luke. he was awake, but quiet, and we made our way to security.

since we have military ID's, we got to skip the line & then the only bit of chaos on the trip occurred. i don't like to be annoying to others, so it's one thing when you skip a line of people who have been waiting for a long time, and it's another when after you skip them, you then hold them up. we both had to do the standard take off your shoes, take out the laptop, get everything into bins... which takes a bit of time right there... and then we had to get luke out of the car seat, take out the base, get the car seat out, and collapse a stroller that almost didn't even fit through the machine! it wasn't so bad when i look back at it, but i was sweating by the time it was over and putting it all back together was stressful with luke starting to get really hungry.

so we made it through security in one piece, made it to our gate, and i found a family bathroom to change luke while pete went and found a cup of clean/warm water to give him a bottle. luke is all formula (i tried my best with breastfeeding & then pumping... just didn't work out as i had hoped... so we use Parent's Choice in "gentle" formula) and he finished his bottle right before we were called to board the plane. once again, being a military family allowed us to go first and have plenty of time to get situated. we walked the stroller all the way to the plane, collapsed it, secured it with bungee cords, and left it (and the car seat) with a very nice man who said he would handle it with care. ((thank you!!!)) we got to our seats, settled down, and pete held luke for almost the entire flight so i could continuously switch the foot i sat on (my spine does not do well on airplane seats.) he slept for almost the whole flight, didn't even need a bottle for take off or landing, & didn't make a peep. he was a trooper & i'm so thankful he made the move out west such a smooth one.

six hours later, we got off the plane and our stroller & car seat were waiting for us in perfect condition. we got our three suitcases, pete ran to get the car, & we loaded everything up & headed for our home in SoMa. piece of cake. so all you first time moms out there, there is hope for smooth flying!

my 5 biggest tips:
1. bring a change of clothes for the baby. luke spit up all over himself before we even got on the plane.
2. bring a really warm baby blanket. luke laid on top of a swaddle blanket in pete's lap and then we wrapped him in this super warm blanket (airplanes can be chilly)
3. buy the person you're seated next to a drink.
4. bring plenty of "easy to eat" food. putting the tray down to eat a cheese and cracker box isn't very easy with a baby so we brought plenty of handy & ready to pop in your mouth snacks.
5. & don't be afraid to ask for help. the flight attendants were more than happy to get warm water for his bottles and make sure we were doing okay the whole flight.

i want to thank all the people who gave me such great and helpful advice. i am so happy everything went well and we are now safe and sound here in cali.

happy friday to all & hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

last bits of CT...

i spent quality time with these two handsome gentlemen
one of my best friends nichole came to visit + luke logged lots of hours with his godmother
i celebrated mother's day with luke's baptism + he got his first swamp walk experience with my gnomie nicole
& i caught his little smiles on camera
melt my heart why don't ya.
swaddle blanket here

*i can not say enough good things about the Aden & Anais swaddle blankets. we use them for absolutely everything. in the car seat, for spit up clean ups, lounging on the couch, i put them on my chest when luke sleeps on me to prevent being covered in drool, and for swaddling, of course. they are a little expensive, but so worth it. for my shower i was graciously given these two sets here & here. and we took him home in this dinosaur one. they get softer with each wash & are just too stinkin cute.

and the pictures continue!
over the past three months...
it was finally warm enough in CT to bust out the croquet set
& assemble "team dominate" which consists of me & my little brother
i got to see my gnomie unexpectedly & she got to meet and hold the little bear
i celebrated my 27th birthday with friends, family, & an ice cream sandwich cake
i spent quality time with my cousin who is due with a baby girl in july.
we are two peas in a pod & i already miss her so much!
i soaked in what connecticut looks like in the spring
trees in full bloom. simply gorgeous.
one of my oldest friends got married & i was totally obsessed with her necklace
the reception was held overlooking the exact place pete proposed to me
& i got to sit next to my old gymnastics coach who i've known since i was two...
& luke's mushroom rattles finally came in the mail!
(they've been back ordered at Land of Nod for months... such a travesty, i know.)
& mr. sleepy seahorse is BY FAR the greatest thing ever invented. luke loves it and it sings him to sleep in the car, on flights, and every night after the 2am and 6am bottles. it is available here & comes in pink for girls. i HIGHLY recommend. five stars.

picture overhaul part 1

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

like the title says, i'm going to try and get all the photos over the past three months into a couple of posts so that i can start blogging about current events. i took a break from posting regularly in order to get into the swing of having a baby and also getting things in order to move the two of us back out to california. now we are here, in san fran, and even though i still have tons of unpacking and a long way to go before we are settled, i feel i am so far behind that i just need to throw all my pics at the screen and catch you all up. so prepare yourself to get smacked in the face with baby pictures.

but first... to the left is what it looks like to be a mom: exhausted & air dried hair.
and to your right is when i have the opportunity to shower, curl, & put on some makeup. you begin to truly appreciate things you took for granted once you have a child... like a whole hour to yourself to put your face on & grab coffee
i am in the process of hanging these prints in the new san fran nursery.
the eric carle lion print is one of my absolute favorites.
he is such a ham. he changes so much each week & i can't believe how fast he is growing... please stop!

pete came to spend quality time in CT as a family of three over his spring break.
the boys even sleep the same. like father, like son.
& waves, shades, & babes. i'll give you one guess who picked out this onesie.
did you guess pete? thaaat is correcttt (chris farley voice)

the first week home...

Tuesday, May 6, 2014

luke took many naps with dad & in his beloved mamaroo.
*the easy swaddle, available here, is one of my favorite purchases. luke isn't snapped up in the picture, but it wraps your baby tight like a little burrito & doesn't slide due to adjustable snaps. the dinosaur swaddle blanket is from here
he had his first baths & was snuggled in his adorable animal robes.
lion robe + shark robe
we fell in love with his dark hair, cute chin, & the way he falls asleep on your chest...
and in the crook of your arm.
& his little tush! i can't take it.
we fell in love with his faces & poses,
his yawns & forehead wrinkles,
& his never ending noises & kicks when you try to dress him.
*mittens from here. these are the ONLY ones i've found that will absolutely not slide off.
we gave him some stylish faux hawks after bath time & he did his best to fill out one of my favorite sleepers with little turtles all over it! (given to me by my cousin in remembrance of our grandmother... turtles were her favorite animal!)
he is an absolutely amazing baby.
an incredible sleeper during the night, so happy during the day, & has brought us all such joy.

*i apologize for the lack of posting. i am in the process of getting my ducks in a row to move the two of us out to San Francisco this coming Monday. i've been taking the last month to visit with as many people as possible (or who were willing to come see us) & sending out big boxes of his stuff via UPS. and then there was getting his doctors in order, getting cleared to resume activities myself, & lots of research on how to fly with a baby + a car seat & stroller. if anyone has tips, i'm all ears! but expect posting to get back to normal real soon! :)
