we took luke down the street to the embarcadero
and showed him the bay bridge... he was so enthralled
this is cupid's span... the coolest thing sticking out of the ground along the walk
we visited my favorite place (the palace of the fine arts) & our friends who live near there for wine & cheese night!
luke logged some quality time in his hat from salt city emporium
no more pictures mom!
pshhh... no more pictures indeed
and i FINALLY got my hands on an in-n-out burger (animal style) with fries.
just looking at this picture makes my mouth water. better than shake shack.

the random posts just keep flowing. i apologize for their scattered nature & i am trying to catch up and get on some sort of schedule that makes sense & isn't so random... plus i want to bring back the outfit posts. all the bloggers out here wear thousand dollar outfits & san francisco needs a little kohl's in its life ;)

sunset celebrations

Friday, May 30, 2014

\
we took luke to the beach for the first time for my friend devon's birthday celebrations. she is one of my favorite people in the whole world & it has been so nice to be in the same city as her & start working on some exciting projects together :)  we laid down blankets, watched the sunset, made a small bonfire, ate s'mores, & became one with the sand.
my little bear absolutely loved it & this is now my new favorite picture of the two of us!

san francisco

the first weekend in california we spent visiting Dolores Park: soaking up the sunshine, people watching, & having a few beers. i already know it is going to take me a while to get used to this weather again. during the day you can wear shorts and a tank top with the sun beaming down like no other... but as soon as the sun goes down, it is cold enough for a winter jacket. that makes it super hard to pack for the day & for a baby.
so here is my little bear wearing his bear hat (my mom crocheted him the next size up right before we left) and his "gnome" onesie i got as a gift at my baby shower. this was his first time wearing it, so when i put the hood up, the point went straight up and having it be in white caused a few stares... (hands covering face) ...so i finally got the point to go to the side & he looked like an adorable little gnome & the littlest member of the gnomie pack.

flying with a baby

Friday, May 23, 2014

i'll start right from the beginning.
you hear the horror stories of people flying with babies & the nightmare that ensues. i'm not going to lie, every time i have ever flown, i was one of those people who saw a baby & prayed my seat wasn't going to be anywhere near it. but with luke, i knew he was going to be just fine. when i say he is a good baby... he literally is such a good baby. from the night we took him home from the hospital, he has been a breeze. he sleeps really well (i don't even have to rock him back to sleep at night... i just place him in his crib & he falls back asleep), he is always happy, never fussy, and just an overall easy baby. i'm bragging, i know... but we truly lucked out. so for planning our six hour flight to move back to san fran, i wasn't worried about him flying at all. i was more worried about lugging all his stuff. but i did my homework & it turned out to be an easy (for the most part!) first time flying for our baby.

i first got a lot of advice from moms i knew (and from facebook!) & devised a plan. a few weeks before our flight, i shipped out six boxes of his things. they turned out to be from $30-$40 a box (which is a lot less expensive than checking additional bags!) & planned to bring just my stuff on the plane along with his stroller + car seat. the morning of the flight, we got everything loaded into the car and my brother drove us to JFK. outside the terminal, a very nice man saw us & took us inside to get everything squared away. we checked three huge suitcases and kept luke in his car seat that was attached to the stroller. the car seat base did not come even close to fitting in the storage underneath the stroller, so i used a bungee cord to attach it to the front of the stroller where a child's feet would normally be. i clipped the diaper bag to the stroller and pete carried his backpack + my London Fog travel purse (i never fly without it... available here) while i pushed luke. he was awake, but quiet, and we made our way to security.

since we have military ID's, we got to skip the line & then the only bit of chaos on the trip occurred. i don't like to be annoying to others, so it's one thing when you skip a line of people who have been waiting for a long time, and it's another when after you skip them, you then hold them up. we both had to do the standard take off your shoes, take out the laptop, get everything into bins... which takes a bit of time right there... and then we had to get luke out of the car seat, take out the base, get the car seat out, and collapse a stroller that almost didn't even fit through the machine! it wasn't so bad when i look back at it, but i was sweating by the time it was over and putting it all back together was stressful with luke starting to get really hungry.

so we made it through security in one piece, made it to our gate, and i found a family bathroom to change luke while pete went and found a cup of clean/warm water to give him a bottle. luke is all formula (i tried my best with breastfeeding & then pumping... just didn't work out as i had hoped... so we use Parent's Choice in "gentle" formula) and he finished his bottle right before we were called to board the plane. once again, being a military family allowed us to go first and have plenty of time to get situated. we walked the stroller all the way to the plane, collapsed it, secured it with bungee cords, and left it (and the car seat) with a very nice man who said he would handle it with care. ((thank you!!!)) we got to our seats, settled down, and pete held luke for almost the entire flight so i could continuously switch the foot i sat on (my spine does not do well on airplane seats.) he slept for almost the whole flight, didn't even need a bottle for take off or landing, & didn't make a peep. he was a trooper & i'm so thankful he made the move out west such a smooth one.

six hours later, we got off the plane and our stroller & car seat were waiting for us in perfect condition. we got our three suitcases, pete ran to get the car, & we loaded everything up & headed for our home in SoMa. piece of cake. so all you first time moms out there, there is hope for smooth flying!

my 5 biggest tips:
1. bring a change of clothes for the baby. luke spit up all over himself before we even got on the plane.
2. bring a really warm baby blanket. luke laid on top of a swaddle blanket in pete's lap and then we wrapped him in this super warm blanket (airplanes can be chilly)
3. buy the person you're seated next to a drink.
4. bring plenty of "easy to eat" food. putting the tray down to eat a cheese and cracker box isn't very easy with a baby so we brought plenty of handy & ready to pop in your mouth snacks.
5. & don't be afraid to ask for help. the flight attendants were more than happy to get warm water for his bottles and make sure we were doing okay the whole flight.

i want to thank all the people who gave me such great and helpful advice. i am so happy everything went well and we are now safe and sound here in cali.

happy friday to all & hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

the beautiful bay bridge that lights up at night with a pattern that won't repeat for 20 years!
what i do for every flight: purchase a book in the airport & jot down the mission.
it adds to your book collection & makes you look back on them and smile!
brothers reunited... taking our first stroll in the city
happy & exhausted!
breaking into our patio before the closing date
and sneaking a peak! (father in law & husband)
the view from lombard street! or any street for that matter!
drinks & tacos at Tacolicious!
and my new obsession since coming here: chai lattes. where have they been all my life?!
oh you know... just another amazing view of water & mountains & stuff.
hanging with the coolest corgi there is
and my high school prom date who also lives out here!
and how could we not take a trip to in-n-out...
it is better than five guys & shake shack combined! ya i said it.
and then we finally were allowed to move into our new condo. cheers!
and what is a moving day without a little splurge from Merrimekko?
(i've had my eye on this mug for years now. it reminds me of spain & i just love it.
so excited to have it be a part of our ever growing coffee mug collection!)
& then we went to this place for the first time. the only thing they serve is mac + cheese.
(i got the trailer park version: hotdogs & potato chips!)
and this is like a couple blocks away from our condo. good news? or bad news ;)

all photos taken from my iphone. if you hadn't already noticed!
more on the way...

well... it is good to be back!!
long story short: i bought soundtothebay.com last year for $10 a year through google. right before our big move i kept getting emails saying my domain name would be automatically renewed. sweet! nothing to worry about then, right? well, come to find out i put it on a card last year that i no longer have. so my domain name expired & by the time i figured it out & got internet here in the condo, it was too late. so it took lots of emails, & talking to some non helpful people... and then yesterday i was at the gym running & it hit me: i could just go back to the original domain name through blogger. it has an added "blogspot" to the website, but honestly, who cares ;) as long as i can blog again!!

so anywayyys, blah blah blah. lots of blogging in the near future, i promise. it has been a craaaazy first month here. to say the least. it is finally calming down, but there is still SO much to do. still lots of unpacking, & decorating, and finding my first job out here!

some updates: pete is back in school during the day & learning the ropes of real estate by night with the guy who sold our condo to us. he's freakin awesome so it is fun for pete to be doing something that he really has fun with now, instead of military bullshit! i am slowly getting used to being back living in a city. it has been a little overwhelming doing such a big move after this past year, but i have the best husband who is so supportive of me slowly getting back into being a real person. job wise, i found the cutest little bookstore down the street that i totally want to work at. with my grandmother being my nursery school teacher & my mom being a kindergarten teacher, i have a huge love of books. childrens books are my favorite. i have always always wanted to work in a bookstore & i used to watch You've Got Mail & dream of one day owning my own bookstore. and since physically it isn't possible for me to coach gymnastics at the moment, i am hoping this will be a great little positive job to have for now!

there is tons more to share, but i don't want to bore you with a long novel. check in daily for lots of pics over the past couple weeks & now that i've unpacked my camera, get ready for lots of pretty pics of our new stomping grounds: San Fran, we love you already!

you know when...

Tuesday, May 7, 2013

you stress & you stress & there is this looming date and it takes up so much room in your brain... and then it comes & BAM, the day is over. and you are left being like "well that wasn't too bad" & "why was i so stressed?"

that was today.

today was a day when i turned to pete and said "you were right babe."
because for the last couple months i've been a total basket case worrying about this big move. because it's not like we are packing up a few things & moving to another part of the state. it's not like one of those moves where you forget something & it's no big deal because you can grab it later on. connecticut to san francisco isn't a hop, skip, & a jump. and we are bringing with us a lot of stuff. and a lot of that stuff has been scattered all over different parts of my parents house over the course of a year. so in my head, it really overwhelmed me thinking about how we were going to pull this off. how was i going to box up all of our crap & get it into a corner so that the movers could easily load it and be on their merry way?

and so, they arrived this morning and (of course) started un-doing ALL of the packing i have done over the past few weeks. like literally taking every single cup, spoon, plate out of the boxes & re-wrapping them themselves. because the military (like pete told me many times) packs up your stuff themselves so that they are responsible if anything breaks. so that made me do an inside "ughhhh!!!" ...but then things went so smoothly!! & the movers were wonderful!! & really the only thing that went wrong was somehow my purse got mixed in with our things & is now chilling at the bottom of a box with my wallet & keys. so thank god for my passport otherwise i won't be flying on friday!!

and so, this day is done. and i can breathe a nice sigh of relief. & the next couple of days i can just relax and spend time with my family. and then we fly out friday, close on our condo the 17th, & the moving truck comes a week later. and then the fun part really begins: getting to decorate our beautiful industrial style loft in SoMa!

*below are the online pictures of our condo. this loft is an investment that pete, my in-laws, and i are making together. after much debate we agreed that it didn't make sense, from a financial standpoint, to throw away any more money on renting apartments (which is what we have done for the past four years).  with the help of an amazing realtor and our complete trust in my father in law's taste, we saw these pictures below online, fell in love, & now feel extremely blessed to call this beautiful place our first home!

i will be sure to post more pictures with my camera once we are moved in!
